ANA Airports offered a prize of 5,000 euros for the best solution to ensure that First FIX of the GPS signal was obtained by the aircrafts grounded in stands at the airport as well as by moving vehicles in covered, or partly covered, areas at Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport.
ANA asked for a solution preferably including mathematical models with real data, conclusions and activity plan with identification of resources required for its implementation within three months, and of course had to be economically viable.
The winning project was delivered by Radio Systems Investigation Team from Instituto de Telecomunicações, directed by Professors António Rodrigues, Francisco Cercas, José Sanguino e Pedro Sebastião, teachers at IST and ISCTE-IUL.
